Re: How to level two floors

one way is to leave the barby-q in the garage with the gas not shut off right, my neighbor leveled his whole house that way,, ok not what you were thinking. remember that plywood, like dimensional lumber is often thinner than the stated thickness and sometimes metric. I did my kitchen cabinets and b...

Re: Do I try to save the plaster, or is it too far gone?

It's all good interesting thread. I am wondering if calcimine paint was used on one of the earlier coats and the humidity is causing failure. I read that calcimine paint was used back in the day, because when plaster is done, it couldn't be painted with normal paint until it cures , about 6 months o...

Re: TIN CEILINGS

are tin ceilings more of a victorian house thing? mine is very simple 1924 craftsman style, but without a lot of added decor like the fancy craftsman houses. I want to cover up the 50's acoustic tiles and this would be an easy fix but I am not sure if it is period correct. They have plastic ones too...

Re: How big of a problem are sloping floors?

I shied away from houses that didnt have good foundations and bought one in rough cosmetic, but straight and square with a good foundation. many houses are sitting on wood blocks with bugs and spiders eating the wood. I'd be scared of that because it is not something I want to contend with as a home...

Re: Filling knots in a new oak floor

if they are big chunks you might try to fill with an epoxy putty, they have some two part stuff that you kneed together and can push in. for near the surface, what shows, I would use a water based wood filler I like to get the powdered tints from Mohawk finishing supplies and mix that in to get the ...

Re: Do I try to save the plaster, or is it too far gone?

Your right Phil but you can insulate walls without tearing down everything. If the house is old enough it is balloon frame construction so running wires from one floor to the next is easy and if he is rewiring anything in the walls will not have power to them anymore. I have to admit I am not too fa...

Re: Do I try to save the plaster, or is it too far gone?

well I don't think there is a right way and it isn't my decision it is a financial decision that xequar needs to make regarding his rental house. so how important is insulation? I know I have done several rooms in my house and have restored plaster in one. I don't see that room as any better or wors...

Re: Do I try to save the plaster, or is it too far gone?

I'd pull the plaster, then re-wire and insulate, then drywall. the time you'll spend in removal of all that old dreaded flaking paint and the problems that go with it , you'll miss all that, yea you'll have to re- drywall but you'll have insulation and new wiring and you won't be fishing wires or wo...

Re: Can a broken cast aluminum light fixture be repaired?

the metal might be too impure to be easy to weld, maybe they can, is it aluminum, might be pot metal? I often fix stuff like this by aligning the parts, then drilling tiny holes, clean the metal parts near the repair area. Sew it together with stainless steel wire, then use JB weld between the surfa...
