Re: Mercy Street

I came back to this forum (after a long hiatus) just to see if you were here! I only watched Mercy Street because I saw the article in the Dispatch about the corset you made. I get excited about absolutely anything remotely related to Central Ohio (and let's face it, we don't have much out there) so...

Re: Hi All - New Member from OHW

Van Courtland Blue is one of my favorite blues! I have a stack of BM historic blue chips in my bedroom - and am trying to decide between Van Courtland and Buckland for the master. I also joined OHW way back in 2007 B.K. (before kids). Ages 7, 5, 3 and 2. I only wish I'd known then how much time I re...

Re: Mice in the woodstove

No knowledge of mice in a woodstove, but we did find a nest of possums in our dryer not long after moving in. I'd hear some scratching sounds every time I turned it on, and the first couple times chocked it up to shreds of paper that must have gone through the washer and were now exiting the vent. I...

Re: Chimney Cap

Our chimney cap has a bunch of giant sandbags on it, which are normally not visible from the ground, but every couple years they shift into view and we look like hillbillies. Our chimney cap is one enormous piece that covers the outlet for 3 fireplaces and it flexed SO loudly in storms that it echoe...

Re: 1860 farmhouse - Hello!

Hmmm. I don't have much to add, but I definitely want to know what's behind that wall! My farmhouse is 1865, and the wall in our dining room bumps out about 6 inches, too! We know the heat source was on that wall, and I'd really hoped the wall was hiding a fireplace mantel, but some old family membe...

Re: Well...it's begun. Need lighting ideas for whole house

Probably too plain, based on your examples, but I love the look of schoolhouse lighting. The two sections of my house were built more than 100 years apart, and I used it to tie the centuries together.

Re: Living room layout help

Pretty much what everyone else said. Sofa table where the wall was, with a sofa against it facing into the living room. Then treat the foyer as a foyer. Depending on how much space you have, you could do just a round rug and a round entry table with a nice centerpiece (which really just makes the en...

Re: Roofing project...

We're on day 3 of our new red standing seam metal roof! Monday was the tear-off, which took 12 hours. They were expecting it to take 4. It's supposed to be a 10 working day job, but after the tear off we found rotten wood around some of the windows (it's a gambrel roof), so they're giving us a quote...

Re: Help me save my historic district

Were there typos in those quotes, or is that one couple as uneducated as they sound? (I think I can guess the answer to this one.)

Re: First Period New England, 1600's

Beautiful - and in much better condition (at least from the exterior) than what I expected from your description. What's up with the shutter on the left upper windows? Are they kind of squeezed in there?
