Re: Made the move
Yeah, being built in 1940 it's definitely not as ornate as homes built just 10-15 years ahead of it. It's also a colonial-revival so I think that "plain" is part of the style. We didn't buy this home because we totally loved the structure, the neighborhood and yard size were the real attra...

Re: What I did at my house today...
I got a lot of work done on our porch this weekend. Even so there is still a lot left to do. I've posted pictures in a couple of posts here:

Re: Made the move
Screens are all tacked into place. My dad has made some trim out of treated wood that we will begin to install shortly. https://c8.staticflickr.com/8/7395/27935648535_10e2c2e2dd_k.jpg DSC05673 by mkeller234 , on Flickr Still need to make a door: https://c8.staticflickr.com/8/7391/27935653215_589e7bb...

Re: Made the move
Work continues on the back porch. I scrapped, patched, caulked and painted the siding, door and ceiling over the weekend. It was a lot of work, but I am happy with the results. I cleaned up the brass door hardware while I had it removed. This spring I started to stain everything: https://c7.staticfl...

Re: 1917 Canadian Georgian Revival
Removing the shutters and the new color really make a great difference. You have a beautiful home, but your "after" photo almost makes the "Before" photo look dumpy. Great job!

Re: Fireplace question
The previous owner of our home was a mason too. Anyway, yes I believe I will be tearing the drywall down. I really hope to find a door

Re: Fireplace question
Well, the good news is that the drywall was a poorly thought out decision to begin with. Our basement is not water proofed and I have seen water come from behind the drywall. It's also not framed out properly, meaning there are no studs to anchor anything into. I've already taken a bad ceiling and o...

Fireplace question
We have never used our fireplace in our current home. It will need cleaned and inspected before we attempt to use it at all. With that in mind, I did get the motivation to clean the soot out of the fireplace yesterday and I noticed the little door in the hearth to sweep ash and embers. I checked the...

Re: What style of light fixture is this (in need of search terms)
Thank you for the advice everyone. I was afraid there might not be too specific of a term. On the other hand, like others said they do seem to be plentiful and plenty cheap. I will have to keep an eye out at the resale shops

What style of light fixture is this (in need of search terms)
I recently bought a lamp that is an identical match to this photo:

I want to find another one like it since my kitchen has two places for a light fixture. I'm having trouble figuring out google search terms for it. What were these called?
