I cut 1.5x1.5 strips about the length of the opening. Then screw them where the inside stops were. Then plywood on the inside.
This allows you full access to the entire jamb from the outside and you never need to uncover the windows until you reassemble the window.

Re: Shellac Application
I did a 1.5# cut and used a rag pad on my kitchen. Work fast and apply many coats. With the light cut it wouldn’t show overlap marks as much. If there were overlap marks I would blend them together with 000 steel wool when dry or try to blend them while wet with the pad. I’d end up with 8 or 9 coats...

Re: What I've been up to
I reused some fittings but I still had $700 in fittings, pipes, air scoop/airbleed, shutoff valves, pvc intake/vent, circulator pump, condensate pump, electrical, etc. Time was spread out a bit as I did some while waiting for the boiler. I could do it again in 12 to 16 hours if I had all of it in fr...

Re: What I've been up to
Welcome back Matt! I was just thinking we had not seen you in a while. Nice job on those windows and the new boiler. Coincidentally I am int he process of getting quotes to replace our 40 yr old oil furnace. You'll be shocked at the costs. We only got one and realized I had to do it. This place was...

Re: Replacing Sash Cord
I've been using sash cord from Ace hardware. Cotton with a nylon core. Cheaper than the red dot and perfect for small/normal sized windows. I did use the red dot on my really heavy sashes.
I bought some sash cord from Menards and it's junk. I'm using it in the attic windows.

What I've been up to
So after finishing up my main work at the end of July I stepped back a bit and took a break on working on the house. We took a vacation and I had a few work related trips. I did manage to make 6 storms for the basement windows. http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/mattswabb/West%20ave/5728E8E5-6...

Re: Resizing windows
Will they be painted? Single pane of glass? Paint can hide splices. Maybe cut the amount you need out and use a dowel jig to assemble it back together. Sand and paint and I bet it would be difficult to tell. I did a basement window like that. I had a rotted bottom sash and replaced the bottom with a...

Re: Finally found time to post here
Maybe if it goes up for sale I'll think about it. I'm back from trip #2. Portland was great and I had a day and a half in Seattle. I got a tour of the 737 manufacturing plant. Very impressive. They get the bare fuselage delivered without wings or anything inside and in 3 days it's a complete plane r...
