Horsehair window insulation?

I'm working through the tedious process of restoring an original pair of Windows and just pulled out one half. As far as I can tell, these windows have never been apart and are completely original. They sit in a small channel and have a couple vertical stops on the inside. I didn't take a picture (I...

Re: How to remove paint from these?

You've got some really great advice above but just in case you need it I remembered a link for restoration of some interior plaster corbels. Might give you a few ideas to try - http://www.ourvictorianhouse.com/Parlor ... %20Corbels

Re: How to remove paint from these?

I haven't used it myself but the fancy millworker looks like a good candidate for peel-away. It's a chemical stripper that goes on as a thick paste and is covered with plastic to keep it from drying out as it works. It will remove multiple layers all at once without damaging things. I think you can ...

Re: What I did at my house today...

Well I spent literally hours scraping and stripping one of my few remaining original windows. The frame is in surprisingly excellent shape. I have to figure out how to get rid of the rest of the putty although I've got most of it out now. This is one of a pair in my living room. The exterior frame i...

Re: Gothichome, the restoration of.

I love those shingles - that looks fantastic. There is just something that kind of "fits" right with that shape on a historic home. Are they much more expensive than a traditional square shape?

Brimfield Antiques show

I'm going back to Ontario for a few weeks and have decided to make the trip down to Brimfield, Ma for the antiques show in a couple weeks. Has anyone here been before? Any tips to share?

Re: It's tough to match old concrete

The concrete guy has tried adding a bit of brown and I think they're getting pretty close. He's going to take the test sills over to the house to see how closely they match so my aunt can give him the ok. I'm relatively fortunate, although there are other windows on the street side they're set back ...

Re: What's behind this paneling?

My grandpa had this in the ranch bungalow he built. There was drywall under the paneling and then he installed this stuff over the top. It was glued down! Taking if off completely destroyed the drywall and we spent forever trying to fix holes - it would have been faster to demo the walls. If I was b...

Re: Tin Ceiling Help

It would probably take absolutely forever with several hundred square feet but I wonder if you could soak them in a crockpot like you do with other hardware? Maybe one of those big square buffet ones? I think that would probably take an eternity though. :wtf:
