Re: How would you describe this roof?
That's definitely Pennsylvania slate, probably from one of the Lehigh Valley quarries.

Re: 1920's? Strange Lamp Finds
A bit late to reply, but you figured it out. Those were primarily used as headboard lamps, though similar lamps were also used by funeral homes to provide lighting effects in a viewing parlor.
I'd say the ones you found are from the '30s judging by the styling of them. Way too nice to be thrown out.

Re: Re-financing?
I'm going through a federal credit union. Rate is going from 5.2% to 2.7%. All of the paperwork went through without issue. We still have an "appraisal" that has to be done. The guy said he should only be here about 30 minutes, so I'm hopeful it won't be anything too in depth. It will happen in abou...

Re: Why preserve? Tear it down!
Sometimes I laugh at what the ultra-rich call "livable". The place looks perfectly livable as-is, though one can see where work is needed. To me, the most offensive trait of the house is that it was infected with 1970s and 1980s cheesy-ness in a lot of areas. If they wreck it, I at least hope they g...

Re-financing?
Has anyone been successful with re-financing their house lately? We're considering it; however, have heard horror stories about appraisals and denials based on the never-ending projects associated with owning an old house. Current Zillow estimate on the house is $446k, which I think is a tad high. I...

Re: Column Bases
If you don't want to use PVC, you can always have a lumber yard (NOT a big box, but a true lumber yard) make the column bases out of oak or mahogany, which will prove superior to any soft wood. Also, be sure to keep that gutter clear and you shouldn't have near the water coming down onto the column ...

Re: Porch Boards (T&G) Filling the Gap
The picture isn't showing up for me, but I've seen strands of oakum used to fill small gaps between boards before. It was common to see it used in wooden ships in the 1920s and earlier (the days when the coastal schooners moved much of the freight).

Re: Ida caused havoc
There were a few tornadoes in Maryland and some areas of flash flooding, but fortunately the only damage we sustained were a few downed branches.
Hope everyone else made out all right.

Re: 1870s/1880s Aesthetic chair - what kind of upholstery?
I'm liking the idea of leather, especially since this will be going in our library. The current plan is to set it back into a dormer with an antique reading lamp behind it. I respect my wife's idea, but I thought the red Japanese style fabric would be a little too dainty on a piece of this magnitude...

1870s/1880s Aesthetic chair - what kind of upholstery?
Some years ago, my wife latched onto this substantial (weighs in at around 70 pounds) chair at an auction barn in rural Virginia. She paid a whole $10 for it. The carving is very interesting, to the point that I'm not sure of what to call the styling beyond "Aesthetic". It is a little reminiscent of...
