Re: Help me understand this
OK, I used a latex primer and the paint was Resiliance. I went by the paint brand that the sash maker suggested and followed SW's recommendation for primer. I didn't notice any warping or anything amiss really. There's no mildew, just areas of paint loss on most of the surfaces but especially on the...

If we don't get rain I'll try to get better pictures tomorrow and the other information people asked for.

Re: Help me understand this
was the wood dry right through when you painted it? maybe the wood was dry on the surface but had high moisture content, and then got warm and the "steam" found a way out? Just a guess.. I mean, I think so? It certainly felt dry and sat in our parlor for several weeks before we began pain...

Help me understand this
This is a new sash that we got 2 or 3 years ago. We primed with Sherwin Williams recommended primer and then 2 coats of SW exterior paint. Why is this happening?

Your stair situation does sound odd , though ?
It does. The more we uncover here the more questions I have. I sure wish they'd left a written account like I'm trying to do!

Re: Log cabins & their staircases
Thanks, Willa. There certainly are some gorgeous homes there! I didn't see anything that looked similar to our stairway (yet), but I'll keep looking.

Log cabins & their staircases
I have the feeling that nobody is going to have an answer, but since Google has turned up nothing I thought I'd ask it anyway. When a log cabin has a stairway up to the 2nd floor, where is that stairway most often located? My thought is that it would be parallel to an outside wall, or maybe in a cor...

Re: A Sad Day. Just Demolished Yesterday.
How sad. Where we lived in Ohio my kids had never seen an abandoned house. The Plain community will buy them, fix them, and live in them. We moved to East Tennessee in 2012 and the crumbling houses here are innumerable. The property taxes are so low that people can "afford" to just let the...

Re: Thoughts on this mantel
Might be a little OT but I was watching a documentary where they had examined the main beam from the attic of an old house. I guess wood has an inherent signature.. it is basically a fingerprint of time because there is a pattern that can't be changed, the growth rings show what seasons were warmer...
