Well, never say never. This little girl needed a home and I was elected, so Thornewood has a new mascot.

Re: What's happening in your garden?
Tulips must be delicious because lots of critters go for them. I couldn't grow them because of squirrels. I suspect where you are, Ron, the squirrel population is low because of predators. Because I did a big springtime push to get the upstairs bathroom and the pantry below it usable, I had ignored ...

Re: What's happening in your garden?
Very nice. I also appreciate the conspicuous absence of neighbors across the street. It's a little surprising to me because yours strikes me as a house that would look comfortable in an urban setting, but the countryside suits her just fine.

I know I've said this before but I'll say it again. It's a handsome house you've got there, Ron.
Are you going from white trim to dark red?
A couple of us are working on windows these days. You've got more experience than I so you may be getting questions.

Re: What's happening in your garden?
In the summer of 2018 I posted this picture of my newly-planted potential podocarpus hedge in front of the world's most rickety fence: 1344 At the time I wondered what would happen first: would the fence fall down (a couple of pieces have; it looks like the work of a bad dentist) or will the podocar...

Re: Thornewood Antics
Thanks for the memory. That was when I first got the house, almost five years ago. I'm no Canadian, but I have seen my fair share of ice and to me it looks more like a pattern called "glue chip": 2527 I remember that conversation because that's where I learned the name. Casey's "Florex" glass is ano...

Re: Thornewood Antics
Stripped, varnished and glazed the bottom sash of the upstairs bathroom window. The upper sash is going to be more of a project because it's painted shut and there is a screen on the outside which is also painted (or nailed) shut, requiring a ladder that I don't have at the moment. The good news for...

Re: What's happening in your garden?
It happened in Connecticut and it happens here in Mobile. 2525 'Grandpa Ott' morning glory self seeds and comes back year after year. Not aggressively, but just enough to enjoy those blooms that appear to be lit from within. I used to feel that I was compromising by not growing 'Heavenly Blue' with ...

Good luck. Any skilled plasterer will know how to do knock-down. It comes in and goes out of fashion.

Re: Thornewood Antics
Was the cabinet a built in at the other home? It doesn't appear to be since it has finished sides. The side panels are Masonite, which throws me off because these houses were supposed to be built in 1918 and 1919 so, although the cabinet is clearly old, it may not be original construction. Masonite...
