Re: Mystery plant
Although I've always known it as "flowering," "Japanese" is a better common name because it distinguishes it from the larger, but unrelated (yet curiously similar in the color and fragrance of its fruit) orchard quince, also of Asian origin, Cydonia oblonga - that also flowers. C...

Re: Mystery plant
It looks like it could be a thornless form of flowering quince, Chaenomeles japonica.

Re: Kitchen Configuration?
I'm 1100 miles away at the moment, so the measurements I took when there are the ones I'm stuck with until I go back down in a couple of weeks. The kitchen is tiny, 10'6" X 8'10" and so is the pantry alcove (across from the sink in the baking pantry), at 63" wide and 29" deep. (O...

Re: Kitchen Configuration?
Related to this kitchen discussion, when pasta was mentioned, it made me curious as to when exactly it came over to the US as well as more common in an average household. I'll offer one anecdotal piece of evidence before I read your links. In the 1980s, my boss (from Uniontown, PA) told me, when he...

Re: Kitchen Configuration?
I think I'll rip out all the walls and have an open-concept kitchen, with an eight-burner commercial stove, Sub-Zero refrigerator in black stainless and a spanking new farmhouse sink set into an enameled lava counter-top with handmade subway tile backsplash. Floors will be Brazilian walnut. Other th...

Re: Alabamy Bound
There's a fine line between setting standards and telling people what they can do with their own property. Like we were saying on another thread, you may not agree with the choices people make for their old houses, but it's their house. Bonnie, as far as I can tell, there isn't any line at all. If ...

Re: Fireplace Covers
The frolicking maiden theme throughout! I also like the insert/space heater. I've had my eye out for that style; they're not easy to find intact. Would the graphite polish be appropriate for it too?

Re: ID this lamp?
Hard to tell from that pic, but that looks like it might be a repro. What about this lamp suggests that it's a repro? What kind of photographs should I take to clarify? It is definitely what would be called a slag lamp due to the glass. I concur on the age 1910-1920 to my eye.... and very nice I mu...

Re: Baby steps towards the future gardens of Beebe
Castor beans! Certainly not native - they're tropical - but oh, so satisfying; they can grow 10-12' tall in a season, with HUGE leaves. Remember the poison powder that was mailed to Congress a few years ago? Ricin - from castor beans. Deadly. (twirling mustache, sinister laugh) You're in a beautiful...
