Re: Ron’s a podcast star, or at the least a good mumbler
Thanks Ron for doing our podcast, Stacy and I had a lot of fun. If anyone is curious to hear our other episodes, they can be found on our True Tales From Old Houses website. We are always looking for a good story teller with a great old house story, or professional experts in the restoration busines...

Hanging Picture Rail on Plaster over Brick
Hi Folks, I want to add picture rail to our parlor walls. I am sure there was picture rail at some point in the past, but haven't found evidence of it, even though the rest of the woodwork is original and intact. My inside walls are lath/plaster over studs (approximately 24" centers) which I th...

Re: What kind of wood is this?
It's pine. Most tongue and groove panel of the late 19th and early 20th Century was usually made of white pine, though yellow pine was sometimes used. If it's thick and hand planed, it's likely original to the house. If it's thinner and looks to be machine planed, it was added later, though it's st...

Re: What kind of wood is this?
Ya, looks like pine, what kind I can not tell. The pine was shellacked before staining. That was common practice. If your going to restain, you will need to reshellac or or go with a wood conditioner. If you don’t you’ll get blotches. The jury is out on whether I will be repainting or staining. A l...

Re: Just Bought a Philly Rowhouse
Glad you're back. Handsome house! Thanks mjt, I love this board, but had a hard time making time for it with the other ten-thousand things I am simultaneously working on. I hope to do better this time around. Your house is gorgeous! I lived in Brooklyn in the '90's in various old row house apartmen...

What kind of wood is this?
Hi all.... Is this pine? I am preparing to tackle the restoration of our original 1852 staircase. It has some structural issues as well as very loose banister and balustrades, so I am going to hire a restoration carpenter to fix it up. In conjunction, I am looking to strip the decades of paint from ...

Re: Just Bought a Philly Rowhouse
Devyn, welcome back. You really never left, your blog link is still functioning. From what I see you are doing a great job. The facade looks fantastic, do your neighbours do something similar with planters and such. To me that sort of thing reminds me of a simpler time period. I expect the carriage...

Re: Just Bought a Philly Rowhouse
Hi Folks! I am returning after disappearing for a couple of years (life gets in the way sometimes). We moved into our Philly rowhouse about a year and a half ago. We have made it livable, but we are woefully behind on our goal of getting any major projects done. Even though I haven't gotten any of o...
