Re: Advice on Matching Molding
If it's a small linear run, it's not too expensive to ship. Here are some extensive molding catalogs. Contact them about shipping. You're right that the small run means paying for a knife makes less sense, but if its' the only way to do it right still not a bad way to go. Bosely Moulding (Baltimore)...

Re: Hardwood floors for our new sun porch
Ash, locally sourced. Blight is decimating the tree, might as well take advantage. Wood is very hardy as flooring.

Re: Pesky Saplings Question
See my initial statements about upper body strength and hand tools. I am built for reading books not digging ditches. Lobbers that can cut a max of 1.5" won't help with the 25 +/- stump conglomerations scattered throughout the yard, with a diameter at the base 2" +. A cheap pruning saw co...

Re: Window beyond repair - volunteers?
Ripping out the rot and joining the remaining good with new wood is way too complicated. Don't sell your local craftspeople short. You're not looking for a contractor or carpenter. You're looking for a cabinet maker. Cabinet makers have the right machines in their shop and do joinery all day long. F...

Re: Fix Dark Spots on Woodwork?
I think what happened is that when you applied stain the surface wasn't smooth and so the pigments collect in the scratch. I agree with this. The damaged areas are craters of torn wood fibers. The surrounding area is sanded smooth. Wood with more/bigger scratches stains darker because there's more ...

Re: Pesky Saplings Question
I was thinking a hand tool pruning saw. Ten to twenty bucks. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Worth-Garden ... /205582381
But then again, I prefer hand tools and rarely even consider power tools.

Re: Pesky Saplings Question
The yellow bark ones against the brick wall with the blackened ends look like mulberries, which are more common, more notorious for growing back from stumps and roots. Saw off the blackened ends with a pruning saw down a couple inches to live wood and poison the cut. Do this to every shoot for 3-5 y...

Re: Pesky Saplings Question
Lots of different species you might be up against. Photos would help identify. Trees that propagate by suckering (stumps and roots send up shoots) are Bradford pear and Paulownia. The latter might be one of the worst. It's invasive, likes to take root in brick walls and the only way to eradicate is ...

Caulking is overkill and not worth your time or money. This chart from an English study shows the value of different refurbishment methods. http://i.imgur.com/r72g8IW.jpg The study is here and the chart is on page 20: https://content.historicengland.org.uk/images-books/publications/thermal-performan...

Re: Architectural Salvage Road Trip!
On the Jersey Shore is an absolute insane salvage place called Recycling the Past. They salvage up and down the east coast. Thousands of doors, factories worth of steel casement windows, jet airplane parts, helicopter parts, a dismantled Victorian brewery, bank exteriors and interiors, 30 foot stone...
