Re: Mystery marks in doorway

Thanks for the new thoughts! The idea that something was sitting there makes a little more sense if you assume the french doors are closed and used rarely (there is a kitchen entrance to dining room), which I think is what was confusing to me (why you put anything in front of the doorway??). However...

Re: Architectural Salvage Road Trip!

If we're going all the way to Scranton I will suggest, Architectural Antiques in Perkasie, PA. A little over priced, I think, but depends on what you're looking for...weird hours...

Contest for Old House Drawing on Instagram

Anyone follow oldhouselove on Instagram? They are doing a contest where you can win a drawing of an old house you "love." You just have to tag two friends to the page.

If you don't currently have instagram, this might be hard, but if you do, you should follow them and enter!

Re: Kitchen Floor Decision

Yeah those are a little to the extreme. My walls are orange, not white, so that will help with the starkness, and the floor paint comes in either "glossy" or "less-glossy" (I forget the exact term)...I'm going to go with the less glossy. Will also do some sort of border if the wh...

Re: Kitchen Floor Decision

Thanks! Just from my brief encounter painting under the stove, I agree a primer if definitely needed. I did think about doing some sort of design or stencil or maybe just a border around the edge....I think we'll live with just solid paint and see how it goes. Some inspiration: http://3.bp.blogspot....

Re: Kitchen Floor Decision

Did a bunch more scrapping and started sanding this weekend. The internet said a "big sander" is really only worth it if the room is over 120sqft, we're at 121sqft...with lots of edge and cabinet...so I've decided to just hand sand the whole thing...saves money...probably not time... Thing...

Re: Kitchen Floor Decision

Minor progress today (will continue tomorrow, yay three day weekends!), I was quite sick last weekend, so didn't get anything done. My dad brought over his heat gun and it worked quite well on the black stuff...which actually didn't seem very sticky at all...might just be dirt? Not sure, but either ...

Re: Kitchen Floor Decision

Wow, you guys are pretty great at predicting all the problems we'll have! We got all the biggest stuff up this weekend, and the worst spot is under the fridge...there is some rotting (as eclecticcottage predicted! see photo)...but its not all the way through and still pretty solid....and will contin...

Re: Kitchen Floor Decision

We have the original wood floors all throughout the old part of the house. In the kitchen new, cheap oak floors were installed over layers. When we got down to the original wood, they were chopped up from all the different configurations of the kitchen. There was a trap door, holes for pipes, reinf...
