Re: Dealing with Calcimine Paint ?

Oh wow - that red paint stuff sounds awful ! I have been skim coating the stairwell, so I haven't been scraping the bathroom walls for a couple of days. I am definitely dreading the washing down step. The blue and pink paint look so similar to tempera paint. I am guessing that some washing down had ...

Re: Matching new to old work...level questions...

The most pertinent question is whether you intend to install a door in that opening ? If the jamb is wonky, as would be common in a house that has settled, then you will also have to trim that door out of square to make it fit. This seems like a headache. Also if the floor where the door opens has h...

Re: A New Old House

It just doesn't make sense with regards to the placement of the front door. Also - the trim where a wall could have been is not disturbed or altered. This floor plan is common in houses in this area. Remember, too that that the listing pics are quite distorted. I wish my dining room area was the 24'...

Re: Canadian Source for Plaster Washers ?

That's good to know. They seemed sort of expensive to me but I haven't ever actually priced them before. As a Canadian, you quickly learn about the woes of ordering products from the USA if the seller uses UPS to deliver. For a relatively small order, UPS may charge $ 50.00 or more in brokerage fees...

I bet your house was relieved when you finally took off that ugly siding. Did it sigh happily ?

Re: Dealing with Calcimine Paint ?

How will I know when I have taken enough of the calcimine paint off ? Will there be no color left on the wall, or will there be a certain feel ? Does adding soap or TSP to the water help with removal ? What is there seems like a thin layer. Does it turn into gummy sludge as it is scraped or what ? (...

Re: A New Old House

There are no ghosts on the floor of the dining room or the ceiling that seem to indicate a former wall ? There are a couple of patches on the floor of the green room adjacent to the powder room wall where is plumbing. Some older houses I've been in had holes like these where there had been a gas sto...

Re: Canadian Source for Plaster Washers ?

Do you remember what the application was for these plastic washer things with the nail ? Or what hardware store you purchased them from ? Or even what part of the store they were from ? I had a friend who would get less articulate the more stressed she got. She would tell me " You know, the thi...
