cute bathroom sink

I just saw a really nice cast iron pedestal sink but with a faucet setup that I've never seen before. I'm guessing it's set up like the thin tub spouts to connect a rubber hose for hair washing? It looks to be in good condition. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/it ... 4085475231

House in review: Daniel Kanter/Manhattan Nest

Daniel has put up a post reviewing the progress of his front hall in his Kingston NY federal house. I'm hoping he'll keep going on the review posts soon! I might not have made all the same choices or process, but he really has brought that big, beautiful house back.

Re: Matching the old Bathroom fixtures

I have the same bathroom tub and fixtures, though mine are not in as nice condition. My house was built in 1927-28.The tub is ok, though fairly etched on the inside. I got most of the discoloration out around the drain. The tub supply is called a standing waste and drain tub valve (or a bi-waste dra...

Re: Need to vent a little

Hi Colonial, I have Crohn's disease, since age 17. I'm originally from Maryland and graduated from UMBC. I did a little treatment in college at Johns Hopkins. Anyway, Remicade has made my life hugely better. I started on Humira in 2011 and I'd say it was effective for about 6 months for me. I starte...

Re: 1940 Tudory Minimal Traditional

I think just doing the front door face and that left face of the front door vestibule would look great (painted the same as the house); maybe 5" reveal with smooth shingles, not staggered. I would definitely do those two faces, ending in the inside corners. There's a lot of labor involved in in...

Re: Help with plaster walls, please.

My house had textured plaster walls (kind of a stamped design) but the texture was failing in various places and old fails had been patched but with no way to match that pattern. Plus many, many cracks. I have learned that, long-term, smooth is the easiest to patch seamlessly. I, and a helper, used ...

Re: 1940 Tudory Minimal Traditional

A new exterior trim color might freshen it up if the white exterior paint is in good condition. In a several block radius there are 2 other houses that have a very similar double gable front like mine. All slightly different proportions to the homes. We all have cedar shakes painted gray with white ...

Re: 1940 Tudory Minimal Traditional

Hi Gina, I'm waving from another double gabled Englishy cottage in New England. Mine was built in the 1920s and is cute as a button with cedar shakes. All my trim is poplar, so was always painted (original color was a peachy-melon --> yikes!). https://www.thehistoricdistrict.org/gallery/image/1567/m...

Re: WPA Photo Inventory, Springfield Mass.

Very cool! I'm in a town nearby and my family ran Johnson's Bookstore for over 100 years on Main Street in Springfield. Here's a photo (Johnson's is to the left of Grayson). https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPUmlMKJ1VRK-zA3c1oF1wMBW0gLW1cG-vKj4vA4txt3DApZuVxTU9hCPe_lFdO_w/photo/AF1QipMTWa8JmtyS3...

That's called a sawtooth shelf. Woodcraft has a blog post with some history. I like the half-round "teeth" they show an example of! https://www.woodcraft.com/blog_entries/the-history-of-sawtooth-shelf-systems Lee Valley has pre-cut sawtooth standards ready to be installed: http://www.leeva...
