Re: 1917 Canadian Georgian Revival
I really should familiarize myself more with what those terms entail- Colonial Revival and whatnot. I know the basics, but probably should further my knowledge. The off-centre porch just throws me for a loop in this classification. To be honest, I'm not quite as familiar (yet) with how closely styl...

Re: Vinyl siding is finally coming off!
Just a thought-- any chance the flat trim board above the moldings was a later addition, not original, and that the entire rectilinear molding around the windows was also added later? In your latest photo the trim board above the narrow replacement window to the right looks to be different than the ...

Re: 1917 Canadian Georgian Revival
Welcome JacquieJet! I like the house and all the photos you've posted-- you've learned quite well that talking to previous owners or their family members is often the best way to truly unlock the history of your house. As for the style, "Colonial Revival" can be somewhat of a cop-out answe...

Re: Made the move
Great to see those windows still even exist! I could get so excited for you to remove all the vinyl junk around them although I know it's not in the cards right now. Best of luck to you completing your more immediate improvements. Nice to see a Garrison Colonial.

Re: Hello from Philadelphia!
Hey there Big Blue, glad to see someone from Philly-- I'm only a few minutes away in Glenside, wonder if you are anywhere near Lincoln Drive, one of my favorite thoroughfares for zipping past a bunch of great old houses. Like everyone else, I'm waiting with baited breath to see some pictures of that...

Re: A corrected history
For some reason Benjamin's son Joseph was referred to as Joseph Jr. I've been able to confirm this through other records. Maybe it was Benjamin's way of showing respect for his father by adding the Jr. The suffixes "Jr" and "Sr" can be misleading when referring to past persons--...

Re: Anderson windows is stalking my neighborhood
Ugh, I hate all these door-to-door guys. One roofing company has been calling my phone for months. Haven't had anyone in my backyard though. I've thought a few times about a "no solicitors" sign but feared it would look tacky to welcome guests. Anyone come across any tasteful signs?

Re: Stuccoed 1890's Victorian
Great house! I felt somewhat similarly when I joined here (although I have my own long wish-list to either reverse or improve some more recent non-historic updates) about not being in the midst of an awesome renovation, but all are welcome here! I love every discovery, however minor, it's fun as hel...

Re: We bought our old house...now what?
Wow queenofthehill! It looks amazing, great job with the transformation-- the professional paint job makes a huge difference. To hopefully help with the "identity crisis" of your house's style, those that referred to it as "regional" or "vernacular" were most correct. A...
