Re: Retro

Frankly, I never gave much though to the actual meaning of "retro," and would likely have used it interchangeably with "vintage." I don't do a lot of online shopping for things like that, so I never noticed. But, on the few occasions that I've window shopped for retro stuff, I'd ...

Re: Yearly maintenance budget

What are maintenance items: roof replacement, furnace replacement, repainting, (exterior and interior) appliance repair/replacement, cleaning/housekeeping? I guess you'd try to predict how much those items will cost, when they will need done, and do the math to see how much you'd need to save each m...

Re: Pictures on Photobucket

I've been uploading to, and sharing images from photobucket for over 10 years. So, I'm just a little annoyed by this change. I think one of the following things will happen: 1. Hopefully, photobucket realizes that this will put them out of business, and comes up with a more satisfactory solution. 2....

Re: Show me your gardens

That looks great! I've become acutely aware of what groundhogs/woodchucks will eat, and many of the plants in your first photo are on their preferred list. I planted some of the same things I see in your photos this spring, and many of them have been decimated. Some plants they ignored, and I plante...

Re: For your viewing pleasure.

That's a very nice home! But, I'm pretty impressed with the tour presentation. If I ever sell my house, I want that kind of presentation made!

Re: Porch Decking wood species

I didn't order my porch floor boards, the guy doing the work did. (he's sort of the go-to guy for neighborhood porch repair/rebuild) But, I'm pretty sure he had them custom milled. The owner of the house next door had his porch rebuilt, but used a different guy. They only used 3/4" t&g boar...

Re: Porch Decking wood species

I had my porch floor replaced almost exactly 4 years ago. For budget purposes, I went with 5/4" t&g pine. But, I also applied, with a brush, two coats (per mfr. instructions) of opaque deck stain to all surfaces of each board, before installing them. (priming into the groove side was the mo...

Re: How do you force yourself to wait?

Based on some threads I've read here, in the past, I get the impression that some people get burned out more quickly, when they have too many ongoing projects around their house. I'm not sure that I'm good at following my own advice, but I try to save the "want to do" projects as rewards f...

Re: Old pictures of your house?

I love all of these original images; I'm envious. I wish I had an image of my own to share. (maybe someday...) So far, fate has only teased me by providing an image of the church at the corner of my block: m My house is only 3 doors up from (to the left of) this church, but you can't actually see an...
