Re: Paint stripping cast cement

LOL, I'm glad I could help, even if I have no idea what kind of epoxy to recommend! You'll get no objections from me. Sort of like adding corner boards to solve your siding gaps at the corners, removing them does change the original design intent, IMO. But, in this case, there are no irreversible ch...

Re: Paint stripping cast cement

I'm so glad to hear that these pieces are relatively easy to remove! I would be so afraid they'd disintegrate while trying to get them down, I'd spend all season trying to strip them in place. Not only would that be dangerous, (hanging around on a ladder) but the final result would probably be less ...

Re: This old house rant

I guess it's relative. I still think TOH is a lot more informative than the commercial alternatives. (the visit to the marble quarry comes to mind as something that none of the HGTV shows would do) As someone who grew up in apartments, in a lower middle-class family, just about all of the projects I...

Re: Dealing with clapboard - separating corners

From an architectural point of view, I would try as hard as I could to stick with the original detail of the beveled clapboards. I see the beveled clapboards as an original detail that the architect/builder of your house felt was important enough to the design of your house to use. For me, replacing...

Re: Starting small

Those look great!

I love stripping paint in the crock pot! I've never used chemicals or soap, just hot water. Others gave suggestions for small tools for removing paint from fine details, and I'd add that I've used an old toothbrush with some success, too.

Re: 'We're looking for a crazy historian'

It's pretty fancy but the modernized kitchen makes me sad. There were probably great cabinets there, before, as in the rest of the house. Why do people do this ? Go to the open house and tell us what you see. The pics on Zillow look much more enticing than the news clip. There's so much original st...

Re: Any Good Sources for Heirloom Plants?

There aren't as many abandoned homes in my neighborhood anymore, thankfully, but some neighbors used to walk around the neighborhood, looking for flowering plants at abandoned houses that they would dig up and take home. I imagine some of these plants could have been quite old. (or derived from plan...

Re: Has anyone bought an abandoned property?

There's a lot of good advice here, and I don't think I have much to add. My house wasn't abandoned, but I'm told it was vacant for 5 years, before I bought it. Thankfully, the owner left the gas and electric on, and only turned the thermostat all the way down. (it doesn't have an "off" set...
