Re: Redoing the half bath

I've never seen anything like that toilet and I love it.

Re: Anybody seen this before? Solid wood "window" sash

I don't necessarily endorse the coffin door theory, but it's prevalent. Casey It's not without merit! I found an obituary referencing my address from 1917: 1917-11-16; Paper: Philadelphia Inquirer "COOK - Nov. 14, MARY A., widow of John Cook. Friends invited to funeral, Sat., 2 P. M., xxx Quee...

Re: Anybody seen this before? Solid wood "window" sash

This is a rather old pic (from the real estate listing when I bought it actually) so there's been a lot of work done since. But it's the best one I have of the windows with me right now.

Re: Anybody seen this before? Solid wood "window" sash

I don't think there are pockets above, though that would be neat! I suppose I can't definitively rule it out without exploratory surgery, but I just don't see that happening since I can see the top pullies for the counterweights. Another interesting note about these windows is that they're attached ...

Re: Anybody seen this before? Solid wood "window" sash

It's kind of low on the priority list, I have to say, but I would love to get them restored. I've been working on the "must-do" items the last 3 years, the sort that will cost more later or damage something else if not attended to. I wouldn't really be able to open them though, my cats wou...

Anybody seen this before? Solid wood "window" sash

The two remaining original windows on my house off the living room (second empire twin, somewhere between 1875-1880) have 3 tracks for the sashes. The top two are for windows, and the bottom "sash" is a movable wood piece that goes all the way to the floor. It even has little wood knobs as...

Re: Slate mansard roof question

Thanks very much! We didn't have to touch the top half - just prop up the roof to address failing brick and rotting beams and replace the decking. It started out as just the decking and a couple rotted support beams but it morphed into taking all the brick down below grade until it met with the rock...

Re: Slate mansard roof question

Thanks, all! I am of course assuming that it's the original slate but I doubt it's been replaced. The house is part of a twin and the other side has already replaced theirs (with asphalt, blah) and the rear mansard section of my house is asphalt too. I'm not fending off any leaks at this point but I...

Slate mansard roof question

Hi all - I'm new here. I posted this elsewhere but there seems to be little activity over there so I thought I'd repost here.... I have the original slate shingles on my 1870s mansard roof - but at some point in the house's history somebody painted it. Since I don't have a time machine to go back an...
