Re: Old pictures of your house?

I found a few pictures of my house on the NYC library website. I believe they were taken in the 1880s. Joseph and Abigail (pictured) were the second owners. Joseph's father built the house around 1806;

Re: New Front Porch

I highly recommend http://www.abatron.com/buildingandrestorationproducts/woodrestorationmaintenance/woodepox.html?vmcchk=1. After it sets up it can be sanded, hand planed chiseled etc. I've used it for both interior and exterior repairs.

Re: Has anyone heard of Brosco Windows ?

I have all Brosco Authentic Divided Light windows in my house (approx 30). Mostly 9 over 6 sashes. http://www.brosco.com/uploads/Price%20Pages%20and%20Forms/B-1thru18.pdf They aren't top of the line windows but they are affordable. I bought a couple in the last 12 years for the ell on the back of my...

Re: Got a Before & After to share? Let's see 'em!

Thanks for the comments on the kitchen. I had posted some pictures on OHW back when I completed it. I was amused a couple months ago when I received a typical email from Pinterest saying "you may be interested in.... "with pictures of pins. There was a pin of my kitchen in the email from t...

Re: Got a Before & After to share? Let's see 'em!

This thread has been dead for a while so I dug out some pictures from my archives to see if we can resuscitate it. Here's some before and afters of my kitchen project from several years ago. I replaced everything except for the ceiling. The flooring came out of a 1790s house. I built all the cabinet...

Re: Circa 1884 McCuiston House

SouthernLady, I'm not fond of gutters because of looks and maintenance. I dug back from the roof's drip line back to the foundation and laid heavy plastic pitched away from the foundation. I covered the plastic with pea stone. It helps keep the dirt from splashing up and gives the house a cleaner lo...

Wild Geese,

The color is Danish Pine by California Paints. It is from their historic collection developed in conjunction with Historic New England. According to their website they have a couple dealers in Maryland.

Olde Century and Ben Moore have a couple nice ochre colors.

Re: A corrected history

You can't always believe the history books. The last history book written in our town was written in 1983. I said my house was built in 1768 by Joseph Couch and added on to in 1776. I have a copy of a document on old houses in our town published in the 1950's that says the same thing. I eventually r...

Re: Incandescent comeback

I had someone at work try to convince me to switch to LEDs for energy savings. Most of the lights in our home are candle lamps, candle sconces, and candle chandeliers. Most are on dimmers. I have never seen an LED with good color like incandescent. My electric bill isn't that high from lighting. I w...

Re: What I did at my house today...

I finally finished the bed I have been working on. I've been waiting about a year and a half to put furniture back into this bedroom I refinished but had refused to do so until I made a new bed. (Gutted and renovated a bathroom, painted the ell, and had 3 acres logged and have been cleaning up in th...
