Composting Toilets and Potable Water Systens
Our cottage does not have running water, and the one estimate I've gotten to drill a well, add septic, and plumb a kitchen and bathroom was about $10k. I've been watching Tiny House Nation and reading a lot about living off the grid. Anyone here have any experience with or knowledge about composting...

Replacing floor, whole rooms at a time
I'm hoping to start replacing the rotted floors at our cittage this summer. The kitchen is fine, but I have a sleeping porch, living room and two bedrooms to do. I've seen several tutorials about sistering the joists, but I haven't seen anything about tearing the old flooring up, jacking the sagging...

Re: New Member, Old Family Cottage
Hi all! Thanks for the warm welcome! Last night I was on my tablet, tonight I am on the computer so hopefully can show you a bit of my baby. Kashka, you asked about rustic vs modernizing, and I am torn. I want to keep as much of the place "authentic" as I can, but I also need to make it li...

Re: Tearing out and replacing floors, joists
LOL, Woodbutcher, that is what led to the kitchen floor replacement in '76 The floors all need replacing because they are, for lack of a better term, "squishy". Some of the floorboards are clearly rotten, all of them list strongly towards the center of the actual house, and some of the flo...

Re: How would you like to find this in your basement
Oddly enough I have recurrent dreams in which I find rooms in houses that no one has ever found before. Sometimes the rooms are amazing. Never have I found one this gloomy

Re: New old house owner
Hi! If you decide to have your wood floors professionally redone, we had all of our current home's floors redone last year by an amazing company out of Kenosha, WI. Chicago is considered commuting distance from there. PM or email me if you'd like their info. They did our dining room, hallway, living...

Tearing out and replacing floors, joists
Me again! Braeburn also needs completely new floors in three of the four main rooms and the whole sleeping porch. My stepfather replaced the kitchen floor in 1976 after he fell through it, lol. Unfortunately he and I are no longer on speaking terms, so I can't ask him how to do it. My thought was to...

Looking for outhouse plans
Hello all! My first "newby" question. Our cottage, Braeburn, definitely needs a new "bathroom" remodel this summer-- as in burn the old outhouse down and build a completely new one. I myself dug the hole for the current one--it was 14 feet from the seat to the bottom when I finis...

New Member, Old Family Cottage
Hello all! My screen name refers to the reason I have joined, my beloved cottage, Braeburn. It's been in the family since 1918, but we believe the house dates to the 1880s, though the original foundation is even older; it was once the foundation of a stagecoach inn in the 1840s or so. It is located ...
