Re: Yankee Mag Old House joke - ROTFLMAO because it's all t
Ha! We finally solved a 3 year long game of "What's That Noise" thanks to strategic placement of rat traps and an ultrasonic pest reppeller on every floor.

Re: Basement issues
I was interested in one house and had it inspected and they said it had a "fully functional interior perimeter drain" the water ran around the inside of the basement!.. I went through the inspection phase and the inspector suggested a new foundation about 70 grand or so at the time. Then ...

Re: A few questions before I shellac the kitchen floor
Do not overlap coats... I edged my floor then overlapped it when I shellac'ed the inside of the perimeter. You could see where it overlapped no matter how hard I tried to even it out. I ultimately just redid the floor with poly. One continuous coat...

Re: Official architectural renderings...Want feedback please
Just curious... do you have existing drawings? It's hard to tell how the plan evolved from the existing (also original?) layout. Obviously the new walls are poche, but what was demo'ed isn't clear.

We have 5 window rattlers in... my house looks like it has growths. But it's been disgustingly humid here in PA.

Re: A new "old home" threat?
My biggest issues with my home haven't been the maintenance, it's been the fight to keep an active homeowners policy. Just had to fight with my old insurance company about my roof. They decided to drop me because it was cedar. New company (2 months in) hasn't said anythng... yet. I had the same issu...

Re: getting paint off of door hardware
I agree with Jade 100%... I've used the crockpot method for about 10 rooms now... works awesome. I add a touch of powdered dishwasher detergent myself. I typically leave them in overnight. Sometimes I have to run them through twice. I picked up a little crockpot at Wallyworld for about $12. Good luck!

Re: PEX Pipes
I've used PEX in the past and it certainly is easy to install as well as cheap.
That said, I just can't get it to LOOK nice... I know that sounds crazy... but I love me some nice orderly copper. OCD? Maybe... but I am what I am.

Re: Rebuilding storm windows with Plexiglas?
I have plexi dead lites in aluminum frames acting as storms. They're ok, but if I had the original storm frames I'd be much more apt to just pony up for the glass. My biggest issue is the fade they get making it look hazy when you look outside. They of course scratch easier too. Oh well, until I hav...

Re: Speaking of old house plans...
Both stages of our house (1868 and 1895) both have at least one closet per bedroom, most have two. The doors styles, hardware, and trim all match the rest of the house.
