Re: For sale: ~6 years of my life ;)
It's not so bad. I don't stay put very well, my parents were oil/gas workers so we moved around like a military family. After a few years in a given city, I'm antsy to pick up and move to a new city anyway. Besides, there's always a bigger/better/crazier project somewhere. Next time I'll buy a derel...

For sale: ~6 years of my life ;)
m I have moved already, not to another old house (yet), will be another couple/three years before I get motivated to take on another one. I have a stepdaughter who's in school in the burbs so I agreed with my wife to stay until her graduation and not a day longer. I will not buy one of these new sub...

Re: Plasterers finally coming ... this is happening
I agree with phil. Plaster is gonna be the messiest job, do it first. Floors are the most delicate, do them last.

Yeah, my table saw is a kid's toy in comparison! Powermatic 66 with a 1/2" steel extension that I had the local machine shop build me for a router table, only weighs ~1200 pounds all put together .

Re: An experiment, build new, like the old
Can you get something like Heraklith board in the US? It's wood shavings pressed together with cement and can be plastered directly using any type of plaster thanks to its rough surface that provides keying. We're going to use that on some ceilings we need to replace instead of plaster & lath b...

Re: Wall Insulation in Texas
Hey 5thGenTexan, I live over in Allen. We have another person on here from the Richardson/Garland area too. I keep my little old airplane at your airport over in McKinney. You're right, blowing insulation in is a bad idea because it'll trap water. I know it's not overly wet in North TX, but it only ...

Re: What to do about those windows
The need for interlocking (or not) depends on the design and condition of the originals, in my opinion. For new windows I built for my house, I could make them fit properly, and thus there aren't big gaps to span. Something that's 100+ years old, well, that might not be the case. Mine are just fine ...

Re: Treasure found behind the mirror! (and a shellac questio
Not much to add to phil's comments but the last paragraph is spot on. There's only so many hours in a day, and polishing a whole house full of doors and moldings isn't a months-long project, more like a years-long project. Shellac sprays wonderfully, so I do spray it. Hand polishing doors and moldin...

Re: Cool tool for sash mortices
You will probably need more than a hand drill to drive that thing, at least a floor standing drill press.
Fortunately (unfortunately? depending on where you're from ), routers and plywood jigs have made those sorts of things obsolete.
