What a beautiful home, I love all the woodwork. The history you've been able to glean so far is such a treasure!

Re: Need help with pore filler for oak to go under shellac

Thank you Casey! I have a question about the shellac sealant coat. I bought shellac flakes from an online source and didn't get the dewaxed ones - I thought I was just going to be using straight shellac coats when I started this. Do you think a water based pore filler would fail if I use the shellac...

Re: Need help with pore filler for oak to go under shellac

I've been doing more research which I'll add to the thread in case anyone else has the same question. Bob Flexner's books on wood finishing are good, although the terminology gets confusing for a newbie like me. In any case, since I want to use a strongly tinted pore filler, it seems that I'll first...

Need help with pore filler for oak to go under shellac

I am stripping my first piece of what is miles of woodwork. It's beautiful quarter sawn oak, and it had two coats of paint over the original shellac. The paint and shellac came off pretty nicely with Safe-Strip and then a scrub down with denatured alcohol. What I learned by scrubbing a little too ha...

What a beautiful house! I went to college in Pennsylvania and love the old houses I saw there. Can't wait for more pictures!

Just beautiful! Can I ask how you stripped all the trim? It looks fantastic and is an inspiration for me.

Re: Hi! I bought my dream house last year.

This is why I'm happy to have found this forum with people with knowledge and passion for old houses! The "RR" designation came from a guidebook to houses in my neighborhood published by the county historical society back in the 1980s. We do have a lot of Queen Annes, most done from 1880-1...
