Re: The John B McCullough House - Corsica, PA

I wanted to share a couple of sketches of homes in Corsica that can be found in the 1878 Caldwell's atlas. UNFORTUNATELY my house was not featured, but these give a good idea of the architecture of the town. I'm really not sure what to call it, other than just folk/vernacular. I see some Italianate ...

I love the window in the gable. Is it a fixed window or does it open?

Re: Jacob Beaty House (1874 Folk Victorian)

Awesome work - I remember seeing this house a long time ago (probably on OHW) and being envious of the floors. Now a couple years have gone by and I too have a few rooms with refinished pine floors to enjoy! Folk/vernacular houses are probably my favorite of all. It looks like sacrificing the plaste...

Re: The John B McCullough House - Corsica, PA

The town has a very eclectic mix of housing types, with commercial properties and double-wides mixed in throughout (no zoning). I would say 80-90% of the homes were built before 1910, but at the same time, I'd venture a guess that the same 80-90% have been modernized on the outside, so they really d...

Re: The John B McCullough House - Corsica, PA

Here is a bit more information. The McCullough house is built using a triple-layer, vertical plank construction method fairly typical of rural Western PA working class homes and farm houses. In this example, three layers of long 4/4" thick planks of varying widths run from sill to eave to creat...

The John B McCullough House - Corsica, PA

I logged in to WG every once in a while to read but I haven't posted anything in a very long time. Life lately has not been conducive to restoration projects or posting to forums... hard enough just to keep the place clean and keep the grass cut, but I have been slowly working on a few things. The e...

Re: Sad news for three old houses in Clarion, Pennsylvania

Wow, didn't get any emails about all these replies. Phil, I too thought the borough council had the power to deny the demolition permit. However, the solicitor (attorney) advised them not to do that, otherwise the borough will almost certainly face legal action. This little broke town is not going t...

Re: Sad news for three old houses in Clarion, Pennsylvania

That was an amazing video. I hope the preservation group can convince SOMEBODY to consider moving them. At the very least, move the brick one, since it's the "landmark".

A lot of the house moving videos on YouTube are in Pennsylvania. This may also work in our favor.

Re: Sad news for three old houses in Clarion, Pennsylvania

Yep - the more I look online the more destruction I discover.

Unfortunately, money is a problem here. Clarion seems to be one of the most economically depressed counties in the state. Finding donors would be a challenge.
