Re: Jacob Beaty House (1874 Folk Victorian)
Another cool thing that happened to me this summer was a phone call from my ex-wife's mother. She had given us the antique pine cabinet you see here and when the divorce happened, the cabinet left as well. Well, after some thought she decided to offer it to me, and I jumped at the chance. Assuming s...

Re: Jacob Beaty House (1874 Folk Victorian)
Thank you, all! I had an awful lot of fun making the newel posts. They took some time but turned out well enough that it was worth it, and I think they look fairly appropriate. I look forward to sharing more stuff. My only wish is that I had gotten the parlour finished by now. Alas, time is precious...

Re: McMansions
I think that just became my new favorite website! I have long hated the McMansion, and live in the land of plenty. In fact, many of the worst offenders on the site are located in towns immediately surrounding mine or not much farther (Chester, Randolph, and Whippany NJ) These houses all went up in t...

Re: Jacob Beaty House (1874 Folk Victorian)
My god, I really need to give you folks an update worth something. I really have been working, I promise! So here are some pictures of finishing up the stairs with my newels and banisters, the entry doors/transoms, and whatnot. I am waiting to finish the floors and stair treads until the living room...

Re: Help me choose a light fixture...(and an update!)
I don't know. I have had good experiences with fixtures from Rejuvenation and Schoolhouse Electric before. I know examples of originals exist, but when you find what you really like and can have the length and finish customized to your desires, it isn't worth my time or money to alter/rewire/re-plat...

Re: Help me choose a light fixture...(and an update!)
I was definitely leaning in the direction of the second, much as I like the pan fixture. But Jade put it well, as I like the "simple elegance" of the bowl chandelier. So that's what I went with. Glad to see others agree. Ober, it's from Rejuvenation, and I took advantage of their 20% off p...

Help me choose a light fixture...(and an update!)
Hey all, I'm alive and well! It's been a while since any updates, but I've been working hard plugging away on my living room and I'm getting close now. Things are going to be wacky for a while...I have until September 18th to work on the living room. Then I take a much needed vacation. When I return...

Re: A rhetorical drywall question and various flotsam
Three letters ... DIY. Drywall is super easy to hang and you can rent a lift for the ceiling drywall for a day for about 35 bucks. I'll be posting some pics soon of the strapping job I did to my parlour ceiling last week before sheetrocking. It takes a lot of shimming to get the strapping all on the...
