Re: My heart is broken

I used to come to this forum on a daily basis for expert advice, and to try to benefit from and contribute to a treasure trove of old knowledge before it goes by the wayside. I felt a great sense of community here, for over a year. I stopped checking in/commenting when the mood changed, and an incr...

Re: So I went to a tax foreclosure sale ..........

I have a few questions to ask those crowing about Denali's departure from the forum-- These are sincere questions -- 1) I put central air conditioning in my old home, because it is my way of making it nicer to live there. (I think that if the Victorians and the Edwardians had had access to central a...

Re: So I went to a tax foreclosure sale ..........

Denali, I'd be thrilled to be your neighbor. As I said, I love your little house-- but its state of neglect before was so very sad. Your new door is a solid, terrific addition to the facade, and you're cherishing your home the way you see fit. Bravo!

Re: Strangely-absent window side-weights?

I actually haven't tried to budge those top sash at all--they're painted shut and that paint is in decent shape. The workmen are in there right now and they have removed a bunch of window casing (to get to some rot in the wall) but I can't see inside where weight pockets would be, because that casin...

Re: Strangely-absent window side-weights?

Thanks for the input. The windows and casings are all the same style as the rest of the house, only without weather-stripping or a balance system. I removed the sash and here's what I see: http://i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u561/carmify/IMG_4095_zps6510d485.jpg For Jade , The pic shows a factory-dr...

Re: another window restoration question

Re: the groove/slot in the bottom of the lower sash top rail-- I've filled with Sarco putty and tried unsuccessfully to squeeze the glass pane in. I tried that over and over and gave up. I now slide the glass in to just that one side with no "backbedding" (i guess it's called?) and then d...

Strangely-absent window side-weights?

I'm starting window rehab work on a side porch, since a contractor will be digging in there to deal with an old mold issue anyway. Plus, there's this: http://i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u561/carmify/broken_zps74bc6aa0.jpg So I figure it's a good place to get started inside the house. (Up until now,...

Re: Front Door Rehab

My door went back in yesterday. http://i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u561/carmify/IMG_4033_zps793b60f2.jpg It's photographing a little darker than real life. Yes, the mason needs to come back and acid-wash the steps. http://i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u561/carmify/IMG_4028_zps842d89b8.jpg I primed t...
