How to fix the lower sash bottom rail

So I may have gotten a bit carried away with one of the bottom rails on a window where the stub tenon was already broken. I completely took the bottom rail apart. Dug out all of the soft stuff and routered out a pocket. Couple of questions. !st I could enlarge the hole to make it more square and try...

Re: Turpentine alternative

haha...yeah she's helping with the work but her sense of smell (possibly due to anxiety and past surgeries) puts the breaks on alot of pleasurable things... I wish I had a separate building for cooking and woodworking...it would open up alot of possibilities.

Turpentine alternative

Hey guys so redoing some windows this year and I would like to condition the window jambs which are currently bare with BLOP. I ordered the good BLO and turpentine from American Rope and Tar bc it's supposed to be better and smell less. We just started the process of applying BLOP to the sashes outs...

Re: oh great another window question

Thanks Phil for the detailed reply! We actually used wood bleach (oxalic acid) spot treatment on the discolored spots after sanding. I mispoke when I said wood toner. Our plan is to use an amber shellac tinted a tad more brown I believe. Possibly a mohawk color toner beforehand. THis of course after...

Re: oh great another window question

Sanded the flats and profiles up to 120grit. Applied a wood toner to the discolored areas. Pegged the two bottom sashes with some homemade dowels from a different window. Going to BLOP them and carry on with the rest of the restoration. I do intend on weatherstripping these so I'll update the thread...

Re: oh great another window question

Here are a couple of pictures of the window I just stripped. This one has a bit more discoloring than the one that I refinished. I stripped with a heat gun and then followed up with smart strip and denatured alcohol. My plan is to reinforce some loose corners with dowels. After some sanding and BLOP...

oh great another window question

Hey guys so working on some windows. So far I've only restored one window due to necessity (both ropes were broken on upper sash and I opened the window...oops). Thankfully I have more time to take a more methodical approach and add weather stripping this time around. So though my sashes are in good...

How is everyone weatherstripping their windows?

I know I've seen Jade talk about using either the V shaped spring bronze or the spring bronze with her preferring the V shaped springe bronze that are attached to the side jambs of the window frame. Another company I've recently found out about is m video showing installation: m The nice thing about...

Re: window repair

So they were pinned. I ended up using the titebond 3 and 3/8" oak dowels. I didn't go all the way through to the interior because I plan on shellacking the interior of the sashes. My question is if I plan on shellacking the interior, should I do that prior to bedding the glass? I know you prime...
