Re: Cigarette smoke in plaster - can we get rid of the smell

i have had good luck with an ozone generator, though not in an old house. I got it as a 3 day rental online and it worked great, and it wasn't crazy expensive. Cannot help the porch issue, though. :(

Re: what is this trim called?

I really like the way the staircase flows. I think the thing that really makes it look country is the white banisters with the wood finish newel posts and railings. Add in the green under the chair rail, and yeah, you definitely get country. I probably would repaint everything instead of changing i...

Re: what is this trim called?

sorry, my terminology maybe off and confusing people. I don't have an old house, but i like you guys and you are smart. house was built in 2000 and they incorporated a few old house styles in it to be "fancy" but they don't flow well. this room is a good example. paint colors are not mine,...

what is this trim called?

my new non-old house has an unfortunate mish-mash of architectural styles in it. This kind of door casing is throughout the house, but I am not sure what it is called, and what historic era it was originally used in. I'm not really a huge fan of them at all, but the thought of re-doing all the door ...

A bittersweet post for me

An offer we made on a house was accepted yesterday. It's a nice house, but it was built in 2000 Like most newer homes it has a bit of a style identity crisis and many of the aesthetic proportions are off. I'm glad we won't be renting anymore but I really had my heart set on an older home. My husband...

Re: Clues for past floor plan and Stairway changes

Wow -floor and lights look great, remarkably in good condition for a former rental? well the rental was in the 60's but I am not sure how long it was rented for. The current sellers bought it about 20 years ago and have been working their way through the house. It's in pretty good shape, though IF ...

Clues for past floor plan and Stairway changes

We're looking at a house this weekend that was once divided into two apartments, upstairs and downstairs, in the 60's. There is an exterior door on the side of the house and a stairway going straight up from it to the 2nd floor. Stairs are walled in on both sides, except for a doorway on the R and L...

Re: Heads Up for Interior Storm Windows

I saw one where people used the hardware store shrinkwrap stuff on a homemade wood frame and then put pipe insulation foam on the edges to seal it into place.
