Re: Colonial era interior paint guidelines help
Hi Olson- funny you posted this as you are exactly correct. We are planning this exact thing and I have saved many of those exact pics, wife takes painting classes and will give this a try at some point. Our builder was the one to recommend going this route when he designed that space over the firep...

Re: Colonial era interior paint guidelines help
Phil, thanks you for your thoughts. Sounds like you are very passionate with respect to natural wood work, I agree and believe wood is better viewed in it's natural structure. I thought maybe I could post some before pics and perhaps that could clear things up a bit. I was going to do this in the co...

Re: Colonial era interior paint guidelines help
"Be true to the style of your home and it's history. Don't get hung up on the myth that old woodwork was never painted." During the time period my house was built (1779), woodwork was painted far more often than not. A primitive log home/cabin may not have had trim painted, if it had trim ...

Re: Colonial era interior paint guidelines help
Hi Willa, You are right about the color of the green, it seems to change intensity throughout the day. It is a fairly vibrant green mid day, dulling a bit as the sun retreats. Colonial colors were meant to be very intense and vibrant- due to the cost of the paints it was meant to make a statement. T...

Few pics of the bar area. This is a guillotine bar, the door slides up and is lockable to keep the alcohol secure. The full size doors to the bar and the closet are original colonial era as is the paint, got my first lesson in heat stripping paint. The partition board that make up the closet are als...

Re: Colonial era interior paint guidelines help
I was thinking the white was too "white" initially. A lime based Whitewash is on the fireplace surround for reference, it is very similar to the wall intensity. I suppose with fires in the fireplace, three kids and a rather stinky English bulldog- there will be some discoloration (dirt) on...

Re: Colonial era interior paint guidelines help
Thanks to everyone. I appreciate your thoughts, sweet cottage, thank you for the link- great pics! The tone on tone is what I really like, especially the dining room and parlor. The colors we have chosen so far were best guess and don't seem to work well once they were on the walls. my skill level a...

Colonial era interior paint guidelines help
We are redoing three areas of our home and I thought choosing wall colors would be easy and fun, but I'm really having trouble. The house is a 1780 Tavern with 200 years of alterations, a fire 100 years ago, and various interpretations of "colonial" design dating from 1950-1980. We have a ...

Re: Greetings from Gettysburg
As far as the civil war chapter of our house is concerned, I have the claim submitted by the then owner, John Carey, for "2 horses, 3 cattle, oats, rye, and hay teken by rebels July 1-3, three miles north of Gettysburg, Rebels encamped on adjoining farm and squads visited the farm". I more...
