Re: Hardwood underneath awful carpet...

Yeah looks like narrow strip oak to me. I have been slowly laying it in my kitchen. I reclaimed about 300sqft and it is taking forever to de-nail and clean each piece.
Mine is 1.5 inches wide by 3/8 thick so i will have to be careful to only lightly sand it...

Re: How do we duplicate 100 year old siding on an addition?

I have been doing some repairs to my clapboard siding. Around here it is called 'cedar bevel siding'. The national home stores sell the 6" and 8" wide stuff but my old house has 4" (3" reveal). I found it for $0.99 a linear foot at a local mom and pop lumber yard. A little pricey...

Re: Gutters: Debating Aesthetics vs. Cost

I need to do my gutters too. I have been strongly considering aluminum half round in a coppertone finish. I think I could live with that compromise.

Re: PEX Pipes

I like pex too. I slowly replaced almost all the old pipe in my house. I wasn't in a position to replumb the house all at once so I just retrofit it in when/where I could. All the old galvanized has been removed and I am now left with copper and pex. It is a nice feeling to not have to worry about d...

Re: Where to buy scaffolding online?

The outriggers are able to swing around so they don't have to be perfectly diagonal out from the corners. Also they say you don't need outriggers if you buy the optional tie bars to attach the tower to the house. We did work at 30 foot and did use both the tie bars and outriggers but overall it's a ...

Re: Where to buy scaffolding online?

Buy it. I went with a 26' tower package from http://www.scaffoldmart.com
Read some of their materials and watch some of the videos on their website. It will help make sense of all of the weird scaffolding terminology.

Re: 1st mini-split in the Old Vic...

Thanks for updating us on your success with this product. I have had my eye on mini-splits to supply cooling and heat to my second floor. Curious if you have come up with a strategy to hide the 8 or 9 condensing units on the outside?

What a nice old house! We are just up the road from you in Canton, IL. Like you we bought ours about 2 years ago and have been working on it ever since. Drop me a line if you ever get a chance to come out our way. Keep up the great work!

Re: The wonderful world of old flooring...

I think the floors look 1000% better. The new finish realistically will last you lots of years regardless of what it is. Some purists will criticize the choice of poly, but you cant change that now. I think your poly will likely hold up great for many years and wont give you any headache until you w...
