Re: Remove part of baseboard?

@phil, notching the bookcase is hard because the profile is complex and I don't have an extra piece of old baseboard around to give to the shop as a pattern. It seems to me that the notch in the bookcase doesn't have to match the profile of the baseboard exactly. There just needs to be enough room ...

Re: My heart is broken

It is a shame that they painted the woodwork. But, at least they didn't rip it out. The paint can be removed, at least. (with lots of cursing the people who did the painting) A shame yes,but if my neighbors took pics of the interior of my house through my front door,I'd be calling the cops, but that...

Re: Best oil to lubricate hinges?

Another vote for 3-in-1 oil. I keep a small can around for this purpose. WD-40 isn't actually a true lubricant. WD stands for "water displacing" and its main use is as a solvent or rust dissolver to loosen bolts, etc.

Re: What porch flooring do you recommend?

FWIW, the floor has just gone through its second harsh winter, and still looks like new. (I did lay down a quick refresher coat of stain last fall) What stain did you use? I stripped and stained my T&G Doug fir floor 8 years ago and am contemplating refinishing this summer. The stain has held u...

Re: linoleum counter top

I'm surprised no one has mentioned it but the late Jane Powell has a book on linoleum where she also talks about linoleum counter tops.

It looks like you can get the book pretty cheap now.

Re: Shut off valves

I got mine from the local antique plumber guy but he charged $60 for the shutoff valves. Not much better that what you were looking at. Last time I was at Lowes they had a couple of decent looking options that were a step up from the generic ones. IIRC they were about $30 http://images.lowes.com/pro...

Re: Orangeburg Pipe

It's common in our area with houses of that vintage. There are not a lot of options other than to replace. Once the pipe hits the 50 year lifespan, you're S.O.L. You can try one of the companies that do the trench-less repair. One method is they push an epoxy balloon down the pipe and expand it to r...

Re: Old built-in murphy beds

I seem to remember in a particular apartment building in Vancouver, built in the 10's, that there was a sort of arts and crafts type cabinet that the beds pulled straight out of - like they were a long drawer. Does anyone remember these ? I've seen those in one of the various Arts and Crafts photo ...
