Re: Old House Spam?

The mailing list didn't come from me. Unless they're exploiting an unknown security hole in phpBB, they must have had a different source.

Re: PEX Pipes

We just had all of our basement pipes replaced with PEX, and are quite pleased. It was somewhat of an impromptu decision - one of the main drain stacks was leaking (the cast iron has rusted through!), and so it was a "while you're at it..." sort of job - they already had to have two plumbe...

Re: Wiring... How scared should I be

Our house is full of old K&T. Our initial plan was to hire electricians to do a complete rewire shortly after we bought the house, but the electrician we brought in said it was in excellent shape and recommended against replacement. Instead, they ran ground wires and installed new outlets (on ne...

Shutting this thread down - given the obvious focus of this community, the author should have known better.

Some, I read, even vent through PVC piping. But I need to read more. Our boiler vents through one of two unlined flues in a ch...

Re: plaster repair

This thread is in the correct section. The howto section is intended for complete guides (perhaps with some discussion afterward), rather than discussions.

At some point, I'll probably start a sticky post with links to discussions of interest based on various topics.

Re: What was your heating bill?

2500 sqft, 58 windows, thermostat usually set around 66-68. Our worst gas bill this winter was $214, with the rest all $120-160. This is for heating, hot water, and stove-top. Electric is usually under $100. We don't have A/C - yet; we're considering installing a ducted system in the attic. Heating ...

Re: Painting old window sash - Linseed Oil paint?

In my mind, the cost of the paint is absolutely irrelevant / the sky is the limit, as the time and cost saved with a longer life will outweigh any possible material cost. I fully agree with you here - labor (either your own time or someone else's) is by far the most expensive part of this job. I'm ...
