Re: Opinions On Potential Purchase of Old Home

Blessings as you wait - that's got to be nerve-wracking. Banks can be a pain to deal with; my brother and his wife bought a house on a short-sale, and they waited months for the bank to get their act together (even their Realtor was getting annoyed with the wait); their wait was abnormally long, tho...

Re: Opinions On Potential Purchase of Old Home

I'm not familiar with any particular manufacturers; I've seen them mentioned from time to time, but I can't find any manufacturers offhand. Perhaps one of the pros will chime in with a recommendation. My house is missing a few storms, so I'm considering building them myself. Our back storm door has ...

Re: Opinions On Potential Purchase of Old Home

$64k for a 4BR with almost 2500sqft sitting on an acre! Good lordy. I dont know Michigan, but how is that price for the area? To me its an almost hard-to-believe price. It would be well over a million here,, Over in Grand Rapids, perhaps $200-250k, depending on the individual characteristics. Our h...

Re: Opinions On Potential Purchase of Old Home

Hello to a fellow Michigander! From the limited pictures, the house looks very nice - many of the original features appear to be intact. AFAIK, mixing baseboard and cast iron radiators on the same zone (if that's the configuration in that house), while not optimal, won't hurt anything. The issue is ...

They really put you on the ropes unless you're of one accord.

Re: Abandoning Old House Web...

It looks like Schag has closed up the OHW forums to new registrations. That was my suggestion - it prevents the spambots from completely mucking up the place and allows the forum to continue to be a useful archive of information (at least until the ownership decides to take it down). He's also poste...

Re: Abandoning Old House Web...

Schag's post from this afternoon: I can't stay logged in now. I think the board is broke. That's it...I'm done. Good luck everybody. I'm having the same problem. I'm sure that if someone actually could get through to Quinstreet, the response would be to shut the board down, rather than fix it. Shame...

Re: Weird sash design?

Thanks for the advice. After some additional time in the steam cabinet and sliding a putty knife along the kerf on both sides, we were able to work the glass free. Out of six sashes (three single-pane lowers and three four-pane uppers) almost all of the glass is removed, with one broken pane (one of...

Re: Concrete box under main floor bathroom shower

Welcome! Other than the lack of evidence of water, my first guess would be a cistern. The house I grew up in had a cistern under the basement steps (part of a later addition), and there was another cistern under the back porch.
