Re: Paint Stripping on Trim: Anyone ever hire it out?

Whoa, Im going to say be super cautious about idea of replacing trim - wood even into the early 1900s was still high quality old growth wood and simply cannot be replaced (except possibly via salvage yard at no small cost, even assuming you get lucky and find enough in one place thats right size etc...

Re: Turpentine alternative

You know this is not a matter of esthetics and just not liking the smell. This the body having a physiological response to, yes, a toxin. Inhalation can cause -headaches, dizziness, nausea, confusion, tightness inchest, rapid pulse, wheezing/asthma. Not everyone processes toxins the same way. I used...

Re: Removing wood veneer paneling and acoustic tiles

OK actually I can answer the question - I did take down a couple dropped ceilings on the first floor. The second floor for whatever reason had ceiling plaster in really pretty good condition, unlike the first floor The kitchen ceiling was the worst - under furring strips there was nothing salveageab...

Re: Removing wood veneer paneling and acoustic tiles

Oh in answer to your question, I just love demo. I wish I could just do demo all day and not have to put anyting back together LOL. It was very satisfying to remove the old gack and get the first glimpses of my old house as it used to be. I even found original paint colors under the multiple layers ...

Re: Removing wood veneer paneling and acoustic tiles

That depends, do you love old houses and are you wanting to put in some sweat equity? Cosmetic fixes (which this is) are generally doable by the average homeowner with some skill & interest. You may find that there are only a few minor holes to patch when you remove the panelling and tiles. If t...

Re: oh great another window question

If it was mine, Id sand it a bit (lightly!!!) to even it out some and get the paint off, and then maybe use a stain (which btw was sometimes used back in the day either under the shellac, or sometimes they mixed in a colorant to darken the shellac - so youd still be authentic). Actually this is pret...

When your home ... the one place in the world thats suposed to be a refuge.... whent it is being poisoned there is a pain in your heart that is so deep - hard to understand until youve experienced it. I too moved into a less than perfect, but at the ti...

Old House Dreams - where should I go live?

Ive been getting daily old house listings from Old HOuse Dreams for several yrs. As I contemplate moving from my once liveable, but now rapidly urbanizing and increasingly unliveable city.... and possibly selling my house.... I keep seeing these wonderful old houses in the emails and I cant help but...

Re: Doorknobs- old to new to old again

DOES ANYONE KNOW where to find #9 short screws to put my doorknobs and spindles back together- arghhh! #8 is too small, #10 too big. #9 seems to not exist anywhere on the planet. The only other thing I can think of is to use #8 and some kind of glue (epoxy?) that would hold them in place, which mean...
