Well... in most codes I've seen, the requirements have to do with fireplace-opening-distance-from-combustable rules. So, in most cases, that would apply to the fireplace surround, not the overmantle (other than how close to the firebox you could place it). For example, I believe in my area, there is a 12" required distance needed between the fireplace opening and the wooden components of a fireplace surround or mantle/overmantle. So you would fill that space with something non-combustive - like tile.
This piece does not include the fireplace surround, so you could build one to match that would meet local code and use the Craigs List overmantle above. Nice!

ok that makes sense. If this thing were on the wall overtop the fireplace then it wouldn't be too close. i think there might be rules about how far the wood can protrude above the firebox opening as well as the 12 inches distance but don't quote me I don't know the codes that well.
mine is ugly as sin, the tiled over all the brick with really ugly tile. I tried breaking them off , I think I can but they are stuck pretty well. I was planning on building a surround and maybe getting creative but trying to keep in keeping with my house. . originally I think it just had basically a 2x10 on top of where the brick juts out from the wall about 6 inches or so..I got one from a nearby house and it was just that with a little molding to cover the top edge of the brick. pretty plain but I think that's all it was originally.
I bought a nice oak art deco fireplace surround at an auction but it was a bit too small in every dimension. One of those auction fever moments I thought maybe I could extend it but it's fumed quartersawn oak and a bit hard to match new parts to.

Currently scheming to figure out a way to talk Duffy into a drive up 81...
The biggest problem is the recent 'talk' about what's turning into a craigslist addiction - I'm already dragging him south for a vanity during Sunday football...

It's the high top t an Estey Style "A" reed organ. They probably sold a few thousand of that model.

Casey, what made you think to look for that? That's some pretty good sleuthing skills you have!

Reed organs are my thing. I have seen many examples of that style over the years. I knew right away it was a Style A.

Well not only is a great over mantle, it looks great on a reed organ. Still amazes me the depth of knowledge we have here in the District.
