Re: Source for Victorian fencing
Thanks for the tip about "cresting" I didn't know they can be mislabeled. I actually live and work in Alberta and rent this home out to my uncle so I'm not in Ontario all the time. You just don't see the same stuff out west so it's a bit tricky to hunt through Kijiji but I'll give it a sho...

Re: Opinions on replacing main water line/galvanized piping
Are there any sections of your piping which could be restricted or blocked on the inside? If you only replace a portion of the piping you'll get excellent flow through the new section and not so much through the old parts which could cause some additional stress on the weaker pipes. If you can do it...

Re: Estimated Costs to consider
My home is in Ontario, Canada so these costs might be quite different than yours but I've done some of this work in the last year or so. The house is a red brick century home c. 1895 so that makes some things like wiring and repairs tricky - I've asked contractors to work around mouldings, take care...

Source for Victorian fencing
I currently have an old mason doing a ton of repairs to my brickwork and chimney. He's replaced the chimney and several broken and crumbling patches and started to work on my garden wall so I'd like to fix it properly if i can. I have a low cement wall about 12" tall that runs the length of the...

Re: 1907 Arts and Crafts
The copper and black radiator is absolutely gorgeous. I'm assuming that is the original finish - it looks to be a match to Japanned (or copper flash) hardware that was common at the turn of the century. If you come across other pieces that are copper with black it's supposed to be there. I have some...

Re: What I did at my house today...
It's hard to tell how big that one strip of wallpaper is in your photo. I'd save it and put it in a frame to hang on the wall as a record of the history of the house. It looks way better with that wall gone. I love those mantles, I have two stone fireplaces in my house and unfortunately both were pa...

That's a gorgeous house - I would love to own something like that. Sad to see the condition slipping, I hope someone buys and loves that house again.

Re: Opinions on handrail/picket restoration
I stripped and refinished my exterior porch railing which had square pickets like yours. Unfortunately, there wasn't much room for stripping the pickets and it was next to impossible without taking it apart. I stripped the handrail and lower rail, stained them back to original and sanded down the pi...

Re: what is it?
Is it large enough to have been used for baking? Maybe like a bread oven since its right next to the kitchen? Holding hot coals seems to fit right - how old is your house?

Re: Walk-in Closet original ?
My house (c. 1901) Victorian has a walk in closet from the master bedroom. It's a small room off to the side and extends underneath the attic stairs. The closet has one rack with bent wire hooks like you've described and a casement window for light which is about 30"x30". This closet was t...
